☆Tsushima Tenno Matsuri drawn by Hiroshige
The ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) known for The Fifty Three Stations of the Tokaido (1833, 55 nishiki-e, or coloured woodblock prints) drew the yoi-matsuri (eve of the festival) of Tsushima Tenno Matsuri in Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces (a series of 70 prints). Hiroshige’s work was also very well received because it showed a glimpse into the outside world which people were longing for in those days. As indicated by the fact that it is depicted in Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces, Tsushima Tenno Matsuri was the most famous festival in Owari and one of the most magnificent festivals in Japan. The picture of asa-matsuri (morning festival) was drawn by Hiroshige II.

☆広重の描いた津島天王祭
『東海道五十三次』（天保４年（１８３３）、錦絵５５枚）で知られる浮世絵師の歌川広重（１７９７～１８５８）は『六十余州名所図会』（７０枚揃）で津島天王祭の宵祭を描いています。広重の作品は、当時の人々があこがれた外の世界を垣間見る手段としても、大変好評に迎えられました。『六十余州名所図会』に収録されていることからも分かるように、津島天王祭は尾張で最も著名な祭礼であり、日本有数の華麗な祭礼でした。朝祭図は二代目広重が描きました。

☆Tsushima Tenno Matsuri enjoyed by Oda Nobunaga
The historical record Taisai Ikadabaguruma Kiroku, contains the following passage: “Kazusa-dono (Nobunaga) enjoyed the festival from atop the bridge. His wives arranged a viewing platform on the bridge and watched it from there.” In 1558. Another 24 years later, Nobunaga died at the Incident of Honnoji Temple. At the Tsushima Tenno Matsuri of that year in 1582, all decorations were removed and danjiri boats cruised without any decoration. The oyama boats, or grand festival floats, were also called off to express condolences to Nobunaga and his son Nobutada who were also guardians of Tsushima.

☆Contribution of Owari Clan
Tsushima Tenno Matsuri was regarded as an Owari clan festival and enjoyed a lot of patronage. The clan donated rice, boats and bamboo which were called Mitorimono (three items of trade).
As for the contribution of rice, a total of 50 koku was donated to five former villages of Tsushima, in addition, 4 cho 8 tan (about 54 koku) to Ichie and about 14 cho 4 tan (about 152 koku) to Tsushima as Kurumaden (an area exempt from land tax). Tsushima received 20 large-scale boats from Nagoya, Atsuta, Kanie and others. 20 bamboo offerings called imidake (circumference about 24cm, with leaves) were donated from Kanayama and Nagara in Mino with ten offerings coming from each. 500 bamboo poles with lanterns were donated from Nishi-Kawabata, Kusahira and Fuchidaka and others as well as 80 oars from Kanayama.

☆織田信長も観た津島天王祭
津島天王祭の古記録『大祭筏場車記録』の弘治４年（１５５８）の条には「かずさ殿、橋の上に御座候て、御見物なされ候、女房達橋坊主のうらに桟敷を打ち、それに御座候…」と記されています。それから２４年後、信長は本能寺の変で死去します。その年の天正１０年（１５８２）、津島天王祭は飾り物を廃し、素車の車楽船を出しました。大山車も取りやめ、津島の庇護者でもあった信長・信忠親子に弔意を表しました。
☆尾張藩の寄進
津島天王祭は尾張藩祭として位置づけられ、手厚い庇護を受けました。米、船、竹の寄進があり、「三通物」と言われました。
米の寄進は、津島五車に合計５０石、さらに車田（年貢免除地）として、市江には約４町８反（約５４石）、津島には約１４町４反（約１５２石）がありました。津島には大船２０艘が名古屋・熱田・蟹江などから調進されました。斎竹（笹つき８寸廻り）２０本は美濃の兼山と長良から１０本ずつ寄進されました。また、提灯竹５００竿は西川端・草平・淵高などから、船竿８０竿は兼山から寄進されました。

☆Picture Scrolls on the River: Tsushima Tenno Matsuri
Tsushima Tenno Matsuri is a boat festival held along the Tenno River. It is one of the three great boat festivals, along with Kangensai of Itsukushima Shrine and Sumiyoshi Matsuri of Sumiyoshi Taisha and is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Tsushima Tenno Matsuri has a long history, from about 500 years ago. This 75-day festival is held by Tsushima, Ichie and Tsushima Gozu Tennosha (Tsushima Shrine). Townsmen of Tsushima serve at the yoi-matsuri (eve of the festival) and the asa-matsuri (morning festival), townsmen of Ichie serve at danjiri-bune gyoji, an event with danjiri boats, during the asa-matsuri and Shinto priests conduct rituals.

☆ The stage for Tsushima Tenno Matsuri: Tenno River (Tsushima River)
The stage for Tenno Matsuri is currently the round pond called Maruike in Tennogawa Park. Tenno River (Tsushima River) was a river formed by the confluence of the Miyake River and Hagiwara River (Nikko River) in the Edo Period and further joined the Saya River and ran into Ise Bay. Tenno Bridge was suspended over the Tenno River. The great warlord Oda Nobunaga enjoyed this festival from Tenno Bridge in the Sengoku Period. The place where Tsushima Tennosha Shrine was located was called Mukojima and a shrine estate (shuinchi) of Tsushima Tennosha Shrine in the Edo Period.

☆水上絵巻津島天王祭
津島天王祭は天王川を舞台にした船祭です。厳島神社の「管弦祭」と住吉大社の「住吉祭」とともに日本三大船祭の一つです。国指定重要無形民族文化財です。津島天王祭の歴史は古く５００年ほど前から行なわれていました。７５日にわたって行われる津島天王祭の主宰は津島・市江そして牛頭天王社です。津島の町衆は宵祭と朝祭、市江は朝祭の車楽船行事に奉仕し、神職は神事を行ないます。

☆津島天王祭の舞台　天王川（津島川）
天王祭の舞台は、現在は天王川公園の丸池となっていますが、江戸時代の天王川（津島川）は三宅川、萩原川（日光川）が合流した川で、さらに佐屋川に合流し、伊勢湾につながっていました。天王川には天王橋が架かっていました。戦国時代、織田信長はこの天王橋から津島天王祭を観ました。津島天王社が鎮座していた地は「向島」と称され、江戸時代には津島天王社の神領（御朱印地）でした。

令和元年。

皆様どのようにお過ごしになられましたか？

新しい時代の幕開けの今日、津島市観光交流センターがある本町では
『津島の山車魅せます　本町・市神社』が行われました。
尾張津島秋まつりの七切の山車3輌がからくりの妙技と勇壮な車切を披露。
大勢の観客が魅了されていました。

明日4月30日は平成最後の開館日です。2019年04月29日 (月曜日)

明日4月30日で平成が終わってしまいますね。

現在の予報では別れを惜しむ涙雨というのでしょうか、雨のようです。
